Helsinki, Vepsä and the introduction
Last week on Friday, Rik and I went to Helsinki. It was still the time to do it, because school isn't starting yet. We took a bus from Turku to Helsinki and we paid 12,50 per person for a two way ticket. We have been a whole day at the capital city and we really enjoyed it. First we walked a bit through the city by our self and later on, we took the boat to a island called Suomenlinna. It is an small fortress Island off the coast and there has been a war in the past. Suomenlinna is also part of the World Heritage list. We really enjoyed the Island and took a lot of photos. Back at Helsinki, we got a bus tour through the city. It was a 'Hop on, hop off' tour, so at some places we got of the bus to take a closer look. We have seen different churches, a bit of the harbor, market places, art, important buildings and of course the beautiful architecture of the city. Finnish people are very kind, they are always willing to help you if you're lost or if you're trying to find something. I've experienced so far that Finnish people are good in English. Also in Turku, because the city is an important place for education. There are two universities. One of these is my university, the Åbo Akademi University.
On Saturday Rik and I went to an Island in the area of Turku, Vepsä. It is a kind of recreation Island. In Turku, we got on a boat that took us to Vepsä. The boat trip took about an hour. The weather was really nice and we first went to a small beach on the Island. Unfortunately, the water was cold. The Island has a number of cottages where you can stay overnight. Also there were many places where you could barbecue. The Island is a popular destination for tourists in the summer. You can get on the Island till the end of august because most of the years the weather becomes bad after the summer holiday. So far the first week was really beautiful with everyday plenty of sunshine and barely clouds in the sky. But unfortunately the weather forecast for September is worse..
Sunday was a relaxing day. I was able to clean up my room and do the laundry. In between there was some space to go running and so I did. I started the second week of my stay with fixing some things for the university, like registration at the international office, picking up my username, order my student card and things like that. Monday was also the official arrival day, so that day the last students arrived at Turku. Tuesday was the start of the introduction period that will last till Friday. The introduction days are not that excited, but we get a lot of useful information and we're getting to know the university and some people of the staff. Yesterday afternoon (Wednesday), Rik and I participate in a event of a student union. We did a kind of treasure hunt. We got in a group with four Finnish ladies who started studying at the other University in Turku (University of Turku). The idea of the event was to complete a list with assignments and also prove that you did the assignments, like taking some things with you or make pictures. It was really nice to spend some time with Finnish students, in stead of all the exchange students we spend most of the time with. Some tasks were like: take a picture with a Finnish politician, call the dean of the university or take a photo of a Japanese tourist. We had till nine in the evening to complete all the tasks. Of course we couldn't do every point on the list, but we had a lot of fun and we drunk a lot of beer ;-) After the game we went to the after party in a nightclub called 'The Monkey'. We couldn't stay that long because this morning we had to start at school at nine.. Today and tomorrow are all about getting your registrations done and finish the schedule for the courses. Tonight I'll go to the movie with one of the tutors and a couple of friends and afterwards we'll drink something in the center of the town. I wish you all a good night! ;)
